Alright, I have never targeted Flats before, however i have caaught one or two. I am going out this evening and tomm morn, and tomm evening. Going to be fishing off a dam. the water isn't very deep. I am planning on using goldfish. Are there any suggestions. I have some chicken livers, i am going to put out some dog food this afternoon, the lake holds some not huge, but some pretty big fish, lake record for flats is around 70lbs. Open to all suggestions, hook size, rig, location of the hook in the bait. open to all. Walter fishing for flatheads is alot easier than most people think. I like fishing for other cats, but I hate sitting and watching the tip of my rod to see when I get a bite. When your fishing for big fish, you don't have to do that. Just put your rods in good holders and tight-line or turn the bait-clicker on if you happen to have it. We throw out live perch or giant gizzard shad heads that are too big for most of the cats in the water. That way when a fish takes it, you will definitelly know about it. We'll just sit back, relax, and talk quietly. Then out of nowhere one of the rods starts thrashing or the bait-clicker starts singing. Doesn't get any easier. But your gonna need atleast a 5/0 Hook, but a 7/0 or 8/0 is your best bet. You didn't say whether you were gonna be fishing above the dam in the reservoir or below in the tail-race. But I like to use a slip-rig in calmer water and a 3-way in current, using a 2oz weight most of the time. The rig we use most of the time when we fish on bottom in reservoirs is a slip rig with a 2 oz weight and a sturdy swivel, a 12 inch leader, and a 7/0 Owner SSW Circle. This works well for us, but you don't have to use a circle hook, just use whatever type of hook your most confident with, in about the same size. But other than that all I can say is just be patient and good luck. Yes Uncle Remis......I Know The Catfish Are HUGE!!!

well, i took a gander, but thee is no visual current leading to the dam. You can't get to the water by the dam it is fenced off. But there is some old pier pillings to the right and nothing to the left i plan on fishing...smack dab in the middle. Didn't go fishing last night i needed to study.Tonight i will give'er the ol'try. Thanks for the input.here kitty kitty kitty! hey justin, have you guys caught any 30-50lb fish this year, haven't heard much from you lately. is fishing around underwater stumps and brush a good spot for bigger flats? I fish Barkley and Kentucky lake but seem to have problems finding the big fish, of course it would help if I owned a boat. if you were bank fishing what would you target? |
